Chuck Fowler, author of Tugboats on Puget Sound, a pictorial maritime history, and Bob Peck, who has written a new memoir about researching and building boats, especially small tugboats, will discuss how they developed their longtime interests in the powerful work horses of the sea. Adding a special visual element to the talk, marine artist Karla Fowler will show how her personal attraction to tugboats has been reflected in numerous paintings through the years, including many Harbor Days scenes.
Karla Fowler has been painting tugboats and other marine topics since she and husband Chuck moved to Olympia in the mid-1970s. One of her favorite topics is the Olympia Harbor Days event, with the vintage tugs that gather every year over Labor Day weekend. She has completed more than 40 paintings featuring Harbor Days tugboat scenes. For 23 years, she also illustrated the tugs that were featured in the annual Harbor Days logo and festival merchandise.
