Cancelled: Michael Larson: When the Waves Came

This event has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule soon!

Join us for a book reading and signing event on Saturday, March 14th at 4:00 PM with non-fiction author and Olympia native Michael Larson. Michael's forthcoming book When the Waves Came is published by Seattle publisher Chin Music Press and is out March 11th. Copies of the book will be available at Browsers.

About The Book
When the Waves Came follows the lives of a hairdresser, a cafĂ© owner, a cattle rancher, and a nuclear-energy worker from the moment the 2011 tsunami hit Japan's Tohoku region through the subsequent years of recovery, grief, and frustration. Larson chronicles how the destruction of the tsunami and the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident reshaped lives up and down the coast of northeastern Japan, altering the trajectory of an entire nation in the process. The book narrates the survivors’ attempts to recover what they had lost in spite of the Japanese governments' haphazard response.

About The Author
M.W. Larson was born and raised just outside of Olympia, WA, and is now an author, editor, teacher and translator based in Tokyo. His stories and essays have appeared in publications including Colorado Review, Portland Review, Los Angeles Review of BooksNinth Letter, and Witness. In 2013, he was awarded a Fulbright grant to Japan, where he researched the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami and conducted interviews with survivors. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and teaches English and writing at the University of Tsukuba.
