The Philosophy of Spinoza: Introduction and Interpretations

About the Talk:
This four-week class will introduce the philosophy of Spinoza (1632-1677), the great Jewish-Dutch philosopher, through discussions of his two major works, the ETHICS and THEOLOGICAL-POLITICAL TREATISE. In addition to a succinct introduction to Spinoza's entire philosophical system, covering everything necessary for first-time readers, the talks will also address major interpretations over the centuries—especially claims about Spinoza's thought as the foundation for a radical politics. Accordingly, though we will range over metaphysics, theory of knowledge, psychology, and topics in the history of philosophy, the focus will be on ethics and politics, as well as the contemporary relevance of Spinoza's thought. Each session will be divided between an hour-long talk and time for questions and discussion.

For reading Spinoza in English, I recommend the translation of the ETHICS by Curley (Penguin Classics) and the THEOLOGICAL-POLITICAL TREATISE by Shirley (Hackett). The ETHICS will be available at Browsers at a discount for participants. Please inquire within.
